Inspirational help in the design process

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I am constantly looking for inspiration for the sites I build and I often refer to sites such as http://www.designshack.co.uk, http://www.cssheaven.com & http://www.unmatchedstyle.com.

They don’t, however, always have the best examples and can sometimes be influenced by advertising. I am always looking for well built Web sites and like to document my findings so I can refer back to them. Its always useful to see things that other people are doing to help me with techniques that will enhance my work. Below are a few examples of Web sites that were built in the best way they possibly could have been and show that a lot of thought went into such things as usability and Accessibility.

I have been building sites for over five years now and have taken some of the principles used in these sites to improve my own work. For example, try increasing the font size on Jon Tangerines site. You will notice that the whole site grows and not just the text. A lot of sites do not adhere to this rule, admittedly Jon has taken this to the extreme, allowing virtually EVERY element to be resized through the use of em units.

We don’t always have the time or budget to be this precise but we can always build with this principle in mind without too much upheaval. Making certain sections of the site grow sympathetically without text dissappearing behind a boxout area or web form is not too much to ask in any Web site…
