Update – Reef Delayed for another year
Work on the reef has now been suspended until April 2009, I take back everything I said in the rest of the article below. Having read the only article I can find about why the reef has been delayed for such a long period of time, all I can conclude is that the lay-abouts building it simply can’t be arsed to work a bit harder.
Things like this wind me up no-end. It’s not just local surfers that will suffer as a result of such a humungoes delay but all the local businesses that are relying on this project being completed somewhere this side of the next decade.
Come on guys, pull your fingers out!
As Everyone else seems to be writing about the reef I thought I’d give my take on proceedings. Things look to be progressing, albeit veery slooowly down at boscombe pier.
What’s going on?
They have had a bad run as far as the weather goes, which hasn’t been very kind. To get the reef completed they need good long spells of calm weather to allow divers to go down and anchor the reef to the sea bed. They also need to be able to fill the bags after they’ve been anchored down, this also needs calm conditions.
I suppose it could be argued as to why they decided to build the reef during the surf season and not before it started as it inevitably meant that it would be more likely that surf was about but I’m sure there were good reasons for it. The construction workers seem just as frustrated about the late completion as us people that want to use it so I’m not going to add to it!
You can read more about the reef and all the stories/news and other interesting stuff over at the Bournemouth surf Reef web site and here is a movie about it’s construction thus far:
