This is a great event in Rock history. Three of the most talented Musicians of Modern Rock have come together and produced some of the grooviest, heavy hitting, sexy and moody rock songs I’ve heard in a long time.
Josh Homme (Lead Guitar and Vocals) has been known to do lots of side projects but this is by far the most exciting. He usually fronts his main Band, Queens of the Stone age, who have also earned their place in the Rock Bible.
Josh brought together himself, John Paul Jones of who can only be described as the legendary Led Zeppelin who played a huge part in the direction of modern rock & David Grohl, who shot to fame as the third and most successful drummer of Seattle born ‘grunge’ band Nirvana. Nirvana again were instrumental, for me anyway, in the way rock music took its next step into the beautiful, dirty, yet elegant & completely genuine passionate sound. Is that enough words to describe it? I was blown away by Nirvana’s honest music which fell right into my teenage years at the point where I needed it. It made me realise that being an individual with your own mind, ideas, feelings and fuck you if you didn’t like it, was OK. A bit like the punk era but cooler and more laid back.
Daves heavy hitting and tight ‘n shiny style was just what Kurt Cobain was looking for and completed the line up perfectly, keeping their sometimes disjointed live performances together and driven. David went on to front his own Band the Foo Fighters when Kurt committed suicide after his troubled battle with fame, drug addiction and a mystery illness that rendered him sometimes unconcious with pain.
The Foo Fighters, in my opinion, were very hit and miss. Their first album was great, full of catchy riffs and heavy choruses, songs like ‘Monkeywrench’ and ‘Stacked Actors’ are instant classics. Then they got a little bit wishy washy for me. Often their albums would have about half and half good to indifferent songs. I think they got seduced by the stadium rock image and rather than writing good catchy songs, opted for the BIG stadium sound instead. Basically, I’ve always believed his calling was to be a Drummer, in the same league as someone like Ginger Baker I would say.
